Infineon collaborates with Infinitum
for the new Aircore electric motor
with air core

Infineon will supply CoolSiC silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs and other key semiconductors that provide precise speed and power control for maximum energy efficiency.

Infineon Technologies has announced that the company is collaborating with Infinitum for the realization of the revolutionary Aircore electric motor developed by the Texan company. Infineon will supply CoolSiC silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs and other key semiconductor components that contribute to precise motor control, optimal power output and energy saving of the motor system.

The new Infinitum Aircore EC motor for commercial and industrial applications was unveiled during the recent APEC 2023 in Orlando, Florida. The motor uses Infinitum’s patented air core motor design, which replaces the heavy iron used in traditional motors with a much lighter printed circuit board (PCB). Motors made with this technology are 50% smaller and lighter, 10% more efficient and use 66% less copper than traditional motors .

“ Infineon is a leading supplier of silicon carbide chips and embedded technologies that can greatly contribute to the value-added characteristics of the Infinitum engine system in terms of energy, carbon footprint and performance,” said Rick Tewell , President of Infinitum. “ We are excited to partner with Infineon to bring further innovations to our industrial customers. Infineon and Infinitum are two companies with the same mission towards decarbonization bringing higher efficiency in motor control and less waste in hardware for industrial applications ,” said Michael Williams, Director of Product Marketing, Industrial Power Control Division of Infineon Technologies. “ We are excited to partner with Infinitum, a company that provides award-winning engine systems with an all-new design. With our proven SiC technologies and with our semiconductors, we are helping Infinitum to provide more precise motor control for better power and greater energy savings ”.

As the industry leader in SiC devices, Infineon provides power switching in this voltage range at 650V and above for a wide range of applications suitable for operating in harsh environments. The company has more than two decades of silicon carbide experience. Infineon’s CoolSiC semiconductors offer added value to customers like Infinitum by providing improved efficiency, size and cost over silicon-based solutions.
